Have you ever visited the prison in Kingston? No, but my sister used to tell me that it was Disneyland.
How long have you been in Vancouver? 2.5 years
How long have you been in Triathlon? Almost four years
What were the sports in which you participated in the past? Cross country running and track, I dabbled in some team sports, I would beat everyone down the field/court but then was too uncoordinated to do anything once I got there
Tell us about your studies? I have a BSc in Kinesiology, a certificate in Athletic Therapy, and a MSc in exercise physiology. I am currently doing my PhD at UBC in Rehabilitation Sciences. My general area of study is the exercise physiology of cancer patients, my thesis project will likely have something to do with the effect of breast cancer chemotherapy on the cardiovascular system and implications for exercise.
What bike(s) do you ride? I have been racing my Cervelo P2C for three seasons now, I am hoping to upgrade to a Cervelo P4 for next season. I have a Cervelo R3 road bike too and I really love both of them. I commute on a Devinci road bike.
Favourite shoes? I am IN LOVE with Newtons. I got my first pair last May and I can't race/do workouts in anything else.
Is there truth to the rumour that your first child will be called Cervelo or Newton? That would just get confusing, its already confusing enough having TWO cervelos ;)
How many times have you climbed Cypress and/or Seymour? Cypress- too many to count, Seymour - the only time last year I climbed it was in the hill climb race with a sprained ankle (I came second overall)
What is/was your favourite bike ride? I am a big fan of the horseshoe bay ride out to whycliffe park
What is your favourite race? My favourite race from last year was Muskoka 70.3 in Ontario. It's supposed to be the hardest 70.3 in the world. It was beautiful and extremely hilly - two qualities I look for in a race. Of course it didn't hurt that I was on TSN for that race too.
When is Dave going to try to do our club bike TT? He would love to actually, he'll take any opportunity to go 45+ kph
What are your triathlon goals for this year? I want to continue to improve on my performances from last year and become a 70.3/half-ironman specialist. Last year I did not have an "A" goal because I was not interested in going to Worlds while they were on the Clearwater course, which is dead flat and turns into more a drafting race where a strong swim in a necessity to get into a good bike pack and placing well. This year 70.3 worlds in Las Vegas and has a challenging bike course, a more true representation of a 70.3 race. I want to compete in the pro division at worlds. Unfortunately the qualifying system for the pros has also changed, instead of earning a spot at a single race (the format for age-groupers), I now have to be ranked in the top 30 female pros in the world. I can only get points for the ranking from official Ironman 70.3 races. These races tend to be more competitive and have more media attention, so it will be a good experience for my career.
What races do you have planned for 2011? The plan is: Ironman 70.3 San Juan in March, Ironman 70.3 New Orleans in April, Ironman 70.3 Mallorca and Ironman 70.3 Austria in May, Ironman 70.3 Boise in June, Subaru Vancouver half-ironman in and K-town (Kingston) triathlon long course in July, Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens in August and hopefully the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in September!
How many of those races are in exotic locales where the local drinks have tiny umbrellas? Hmm I wouldn't know, these trips are purely business ;) That's what I told my PhD supervisor anyway.
When will you do full Ironman? Honestly I am really tempted to see how well I can do right now, but I think I will wait until I am done my PhD. I don't want to do it unless I can fully commit to doing my best. I don't think I can be successful in my PhD AND do a sub 10 hour Ironman.
What do LETC members not know about you? I love beer. I just love the taste of it. It is really hard for me to not have a beer when I go out for dinner the night before a race.
Why is your cat named Chevy? When my former roommate and I adopted her from the Humane Society her name was Candy, and we didn't want our cat to have a strippers name. Both of us being country girls, it seemed appropriate.
