Volunteer impressions at the Subaru Triathlon.

Today was the first time I volunteered at a triathlon and actually the first time I've seen one live. I was on the bike course across from the Chan Centre parking so did not see the washing machine that was the swim. Its interesting to see the riders on what I consider to be "our" course. Some impressions: Hard to recognize people you know with helmets on. Time for personalized name tags? Of course, Teresa was easy to recognize, she's smiling the whole ride and having a grand old time. Bronwyn went by with a bemused look on her face that seemed to be saying "La La here I am again racing around in Spandex" Martina must have gone by too fast as I never did see her. Alison looked like she was smiling, but I was informed later on that it was a determined grimace. Marie had the game face on, she was hunting prey. Chris Manore seemed to be the calmest guy in the race, just going about his business, getting the job done, no need for dramatics. Stephanie had that "No way my sister is getting near me today" look, no time for chitchats with the volunteers today! It was great to see our club members out there and I would love to do this race next year.

Most drivers were very cooperative with the marshalls,  however, there are always a few nut jobs and we had a few of those. I just gave them my best Blue Steel look, and they caved. Well done LETC!

2009 transition

Well, that was it for the 2009 LETC triathlon season! And what an awesome season it was! There are even a few brave souls soldiering on into the fall for late October events in Clearwater, FLA and Perth, Australia. For those who suffer from separation anxiety, the Thursday running sessions will continue on until December and a fall run training schedule should be out soon.  Remember to sign up for fall running races such as the Turkey Trot 10 k on Thanksgiving Monday, the Fall Classic 10 k and half marathon and the Haney to Harrison relay.

"THANK YOU!" to all of our members who supported the club, each other and all we represent at LETC.

We will be following up with everyone on what you liked, did not like and wished we could have done.

Not to overlook our Year End costume party! This year's theme might be "What not to wear to a triathlon" or something better if you get your ideas posted in comments to this post!

LETC weekend results

LETC had a rockin' weekend around BC with a whack of podium finishes at BC Provincial Championships and on da island at the Sooke Half-iron! HIGHLIGHTS...

Martina is BC Olympic Distance Champion! Coach Andrew was 2nd overall and won M4549 after having one of his career best dream races where everything clicked. Adrienne, Rebecca and Brenda were also crowned BC Champions with Tall Jeff, Clarke, Penny and Bronwyn taking second in their categories. Clayton rounded out the Provicial Championship podiums by LETC with his third place finish. Jody just missed the podium thanks to a rather unequal enforcement of the little enforced rule that does not permit altering of the race number.  Her 2 minute penalty dropped her to 4th- so LETCers beware! don't alter that number without written approval by the head official!

Special congrats to Christine who did her first open water Olympic distance race!

In the Sprint Distance event, Rob J continued his love of triathlon with a second overall and second in his category.  Mary won the W6669 category finishing off her season with a great race as did Andrew H who also placed second.

Over on Vancouver Island at the Sooke Half Iron, Aussie Jeff posted an 11 minute PB over the half iron distance while placing third in M4044.  Way to go Jeff!

2009 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

LETC had a great showing at Olympic Distance Nationals this weekend in Kelowna. We had ? participants and came home with 6 podiums (3 for the girl's team and 3 for the boy's) and 8 top five finishes (3 for the girl's team and 5 for the boy's).  Way to go team!

Some special mentions are due to Stephanie and Rob Johnson our National Champions!  Stephanie repeated as National Champion, following up on her breakthrough 2008 season by winning the women's 40-44 field this time around by over 6 minutes!  Rob continued his impressive first season in tri by scoring a sprint distance win and in so doing denying Choppy a gold medal.

In the Elite women, Martina stepped up her performance against Canada's World Cup medalists and scored a 10th place finish against a super deep field, improving on her 11th in 08 and scoring some great ITU Continental Cup points.

Honourable mentions go to Amy and Rob for running on painful injuries but stepping up to race- despite knowing better ;-)
